Can I remove the crank case cover without taking the engine out?

Looks like its the next thing for me to do.

You can remove the clutch cover or 'wok' as its known pretty easily. Bit of a fiddle on some of the lower bolts but not to bad.

You need to support and slightly jack up the engine on the clutch side from under the gearbox (use a bit of wood between the casing and jack) then undo the engine mounting on that side. Then you can undo all the clutch cover bolts.

Once off you can have a look at the clutch and the release bearing.

Is it when stationary or moving?? Could just be the exhaust bouncing once the load is taken of the engine, I.e engine moving backwards n forwards.

Cheers mike

It happens while driving and stationary too. I did notice earlier it made the noise while I cranked the engine over then stops after a few seconds.

i would start with checking the length of the bolts holding the clutch slave cylinder/bracket in place

I have been using the car for a while now and haven't changed anything such as the slave cylinder bolts or starter motor bolts.

If they were the problem I would have thought the knocking would have been present a while ago.

I could have got the bolts mixed up while I had the engine out but like I said above the knocking would have been present earlier?

Yes, it points to clutch internals, not the obvious things which you have checked. Now one of the golden rules of engineering is to always suspect the last thing that was done in the area, but you don't seem to have done anything to the clutch recently, so we can rule that out.

It is still looking like the release bearing, although they don't usually make that kind of noise.

I did no work to the clutch end of the engine, only put the slave cylinder back on after putting the engine back in.

Just a list of things i have done:

Supercharger kit added
x-pin diff
cylinder head replaced

I do know that some people had the same problem as me when fitting the supercharger it creates a flat on top of the exhaust branch under it (making a knocking noise for a while until it's beaten flat). I don't think this is the problem but i thought it would be worth saying.

Have you tested the crank endfloat yet?

What Compression ratio is the new head skimmed to?

You won't be able to do it by hand, use a long, flat bladed screwdriver or similar either behind the crank pully, or behind the flywheel to lever it each way.
