Ok some progress.

I have changed the earth strap and I now have everything but headlights and windscreen wipers.

Windscreen wipers I can understand because the moter was disturbed whilst working under the engine bay so I could have broke a connection etc so will try those and see how I get on.

The headlight bulbs haven't gone, I've checked those by connecting directly to the battery and they are fine and also they now light up with main beam.

The switch isn't reversible, it has brown, red and blue wires attached to the back but will only go on one way.

After this I'm a little bit lost, not used a multimeter before so not sure where I have to put it to check the wires are live and what to set it on

Set your multimeter to the 20V DC range, or nearest. Put the croc clip on the black wire, and clip it on to some earthed metalwork, such as the heater mounting stud, or steering column to parcel shelf bolts. With the steering column shroud off, probe the connectors there for about 12V at the blue wire, with headlights on, and report back.

Had to stop again tonight but will be back to it tomorrow, weather permitting, thanks again for your help.

My other half is expecting any day now so if I disappear for a few days don't think I'm being rude ;-)

Ok I have just under 12v on the blue wire, checked it right at the back of the switch

Ah, the infamous bullet connector problem! You might want to relocate these somewhere else, out of the way of water and road dirt, as headlight failure can be very dangerous. I also would connect each side to its own earth, not relying on the black wire in that same bunch of bullet connectors for anything, as when it goes,it takes out main and dip. Not good on a dark road!

Will do, cheers for your advice on this, turn out the windscreen wipers were a mechanical issue rather than an electrical one so all is sorted for now.

That was until I found an oil leak and it looks like the engine is coming out again!!!! Ah the joy of motoring
