Hello
Im currently in the process of restoring my 1994 Mini
I am fitting a 1275 and was thinking about putting a side exit exhaust on it , to be different,
I would run the pipe under the can throught the exhause channel then bring it up though the cars floor jsut behind the seats then turn it so it exits on the sideat the bottem under the rear window.

Has anyone ever done this or can see any problems with doing this ?

Cheers
eddy

you would either have to run the car really really high or cut a tunnel into the floor for the exhaust not to scrape on the floor.

there is something like this beign done on a project here, but he has made massive mods for it to work! called "frumpy gets some love' it is under complete mini rebuilds.

Surely I can run the exhaust in the original tunnel ?

just behind the rear seat is the subframe
the mini is a very compact design, have a look at how others have done it. You need to isolate the exhaust from the cabin area to prevent you breathing exhaust gasses
Ratty is another car with side exit exhaust

Diglers awesome beast has this too, not sure I'd want a red hot exhaust that close to my backside though haha

Yeah digler has a side exit through the exhaust tunnel then its in its own tunnel that he fabbed up, then exits through the sill, but you would have to re-inforce the sill as that is a main structual area ( technically the whole shell is being a monocoque, but the sills provide a lot of the side impact and torsional strength)

by the way looks awesome :P

i saw how diggler did his, i think the easiest way to do it would be to fabricate your own extension of the exhaust tunnel that runs to the side of the car.

this way the exhaust is never "inside" the car. it would be quicker to do it this way, would make fitting the exhaust much simpler (rather than threading it through a tube etc) and if you did a good job of it, i.e neat, with good welds, and good design it would probably be stronger and stiffer than an unmodified shell.

i agree with you on that if welded right, it would be stronger than standard.

this was the first exhaust i made using a stainless back box.

it worked fine, but my car is now very low thats why i did it like i have.
it does get warm, but not too bad.

hi eddy,

my project is the one mentioned earlier "frumpy gets some love"

as already said i have made some extensive modifications to the rear floors for my exhausts to fit and work safely (not to say that anyone elses methods aren't safe)

i have made a form of "cage" to sit over my new exhaust tunnels which are welded to the rear floors, which help put some of the strength back into the car, this with the addition of my multipoint roll cage means that my shell is still very strong.

here you can see where the exhaust exits and also some of the new exhaust tunnel

here is a photo of the exhaust in place

and one of the complete exhaust off the car

one thing i will say is that this is a very extensive mod to complete and you need to put a lot of thought into keeping the car safe. there are more simple ways of doing a sill exit but it depends on what exactly you want it to be like.
feel free to pm me if you need any more photos etc

Ben

i think you have made a very thorough and solid job of that mate, especially encorporating the steel tube as well as the sheet steel raised floor esction.

dare i say it i think its a little over engineered in my opinion, but hey, what do i know about it.
