Ok I'm in the process of pulling out my engine.. all was going swimmingly until I tried to disconnect the gear changing rod from the gear selector, at the back of the sump just below the diff.

2 roll pins hold the selector in place at 90 degrees to eachother, tried initially to remove them by tapping with a punch but no movement. I can't tap it upwards because I won't be able to pull it out from above so it has to come downwards...

So, my brainwave... "I know what'll sort this, I'll self tap a screw in there and lever it out with a claw hammer, yes fantastic idea!"

Not such a good idea, the screw snapped off flush with selector. "S***!!" So I tried to drill it out but no luck, the screw is solid in there, drill keeps slipping and I'm damaging the housing.

Spent a few hours pulling my hair out, eventually I threw my toys out of the pram and packed up!

Not sure what to do really, any suggestions to rectify my 'Einstein' moment? It's so bleeding awkward under there, I only have a foot and a half clearance from the ground max due to the axle stands.

Can't get the engine out until I disconnect it, its ready otherwise.... SOS please!

stick it in reverse and knock it up.

unless you've wound the self tapper in so much that it's expanded the pin it should come out ok.

failing that try the one to the rear.

I was like this, instead of doing a screw thing I just hit it harder and upwards, it popped out like it wasn't even a problem before.

If at first you don't succeed, HIT IT HARDER..... Works with pretty much everything.

Good old Scrapheap challenge saying

If all else fails, hit it with a hammer.
If that fails, get a bigger hammer.

It goes a lot easier with a pin punch of the proper diameter, which will not jam, or expand the roll pin. Never a screw! All reputable Mini suppliers have the correct tool, but any bit of fairly hard steel rod of the correct diameter, with a flat end, will do. I made one from a broken screwdriver once. Previously, I ground the point of a nail flat, but it was a bit soft.
