Clutch housing breather

Can someone please explain to me the purpose of the breather on the clutch/flywheel housing? Surely the oil seals separate it from the crankcase (Which I can understand needing a breather or 20) Surely too if you have oil fumes in there, you'd have oil too (which wouldn't exactly be conducive to good clutch drive!)

it is on th flywheel housing, yes, bet if you look closely it actually breathes the engine not the flywheel area.
