I saw that too, great movie! :P LOL

Yeah, thats why I thought of personal 4 digit/letter stamping where only the owner knows where. They could then call up and cross reference sellers with parts to see if they are still with the original owner or not.

Would also be an interesting long analysis to document where these parts all end up generally! A bit like hallmarking fine china or precious metals!

We do edit private information out of posts, particularly when it's someone else's, but you can't rely on us to spot everything untoward. The information you post online is primarily your own responsibility.

Buying stuff via TMF does give you the ability to review the seller's posting history, if you spot someone who's selling history far exceeds what would seem likely from their other Mini activities by all means bring it the attention of the forum admins 'n mods.

There is such a thing as paranoia! Yes, people generally are too free with the personal information they leave on social networking sites and in the public domain, but it is their choice and who would want to live in a society where everyone is having to be suspicious of everyone else?

Marking items is certainly a good idea and is one the police actively encourage. They use a UV marker which is invisible under normal light and is totally non destructive - cheap and effective.

But, while not disagreeing with the points made by the OP., most criminals are too lazy to plan their thefts. See something, take it and wreck it or move it on....... Nice easy money and the chances of being caught low and the likelyhood of any meaningful punishment virtually zero.

It's our society and up to all of us to shape it.

Also, if you take a picture with your iPhone 4 and newer, one can find out easily where exactly it was taken with its geotag.

IIRC that's off on iPhones anyway, so unless you put it on yourself then shouldn't be a problem.

To check any photo's you are posting right click on them and look at properties, if it has been geo tagged it will be shown there, this can be removed. It is fairly common for cars for sale of all types to get nicked and it is thought a fair amount of this is from geo tagging so please be aware.

Signs that say : "Police notice: Be aware- thieves operate in this area" . Signs that say: "Lock up your valuables". . TV adverts that say: . "Don't give them an easy ride" . . And posts on Forums like the O.P's

Now don't get me wrong, Danm is entirely correct in what he has said. . But my question would be,- why should we have to suffer because of scum? . Those signs should say . : "Thieves!- we will find you" . And those TV ads should say:: " Criminals.. We are coming for you. Prepare to face justice" .
....And instead of Being scared what to share with our friends on forums such as this, where people with a shared interest come to cat and discuss. We would be posting what we want, .whilst assuring the criminal scum that their actions will be dealt with extremely harshly.

Now I know we don't live in a Utopia, far from it. .But why should WE the law abiding majority, have to change or desist in those activities which we enjoy, in fear of activity from a criminal minority? . It is not right.

We shouldn't have to be afraid. .Alas we do.

There are internet sites for every car model/type/variation on the market past and present

If someone wants to target a certain make of car its pretty easy to do, you hit google and follow the many different forum leads

Its up to the owner to be careful what they post, where they post it, and protect their own possessions

Times have changed

Where I'm from, a lot of parking garages in the downtown area have bait cars parked in them that locks the thieves inside. There are also posters of convicted car thieves' mug shots imposed behind jail bars with caption that reads: Don't be this guy. And there are Banksy styled graffiti of policemen with K9s barking on a leash spray painted on parking lot walls. Their studies show scums are deathly afraid of dogs apparently. They don't ask you to put your hands in the air, they just bite your face off.

Statistics in my city show car thefts are getting quite rare and insurance premiums are declining as a result (state run car insurance).
