Hows the power steering pump?

Still on my 2002 pump........the Electro-Hydraulic Power steering pump on Mk1 MINI's was another Rover designed and engineered part of the R50...........however it does give great steering feedback which is why they insisted on using it and is quite easy to replace. The characteristic whine is a unique part of the early MINI's character. I like many owners have grown to like it in the same way as I love the whine of a classic Mini's drop gears!

Mk2 MINI's use fully electric ps column with few failures but sadly there is no characteristic whining sound anymore. :(

How to replace ps pump:

Mini gearbox is much easier to drop the subframe. It takes only a few hours, leaving the engine in. It looks daunting but once the subframe is out the way is really simple.
The 6 speed box is a much better gearbox.
But a bigger job to get out.

As with any modern car, they are very time consuming to work on and parts are usually expensive. It's certainly not a Bini only thing

I wish they used the k series engine in the bini... headgasket :shifty:

It is rumoured that Rover tried to do that!

Every car will get a fault. And most will not survive an oil pump failure. The new turbo engines use a lot of oil and the modern day drivers don't check it because "its dirty" I've had several coming in saying "the engine knocks" only to find no oil what so ever.

Tritec engine was developed by Rover together with Chrysler, and binned because BMW told the engine is no good, and switched to peugeot, thats in 2008, tritec is now owned by FIAT.

It won't with oil pump failure
On my bike, the oil drive sheared and it locked up on the m69 after only 2700 miles from new
I had a complete engine rebuild under warrenty. Failures happen though

How does you wife drive? Does she ride the clutch?

A clutch is a comsumable and can fail in a short duration of time if driven badly on any vehicle.

With a second hand vehicle you never know what the vehicle has been drven like prior to your ownership.

the BMW mini is no different to other modern car's and isn't designed to last like classic car's were

A classic car will probably last to around 100,000 miles, a modern car will easily last to 200,000 miles if looked after.

If anything modern cars are designed to last longer and deal with being negligent more.
