After a very long two week wait, today I finally collected Milly the Maestro. Her proper name is Millicent, but I'll only call her that if she's naughty or if I have to introduce her to the Queen or something, so she'll usually be called Milly.

She was built at Cowley on 25th May 1983 and registered on 16th June 1983. She is a 1.3L, but for the eagled eyed, yes she does have 1.6 wheels so I am currently on the look out for the correct slotted wheels. The only other non-original parts on her are the dealer fitted decals and the grill badge. The first owner had a small front end prang and when she was repaired, the wrong grill badge was fitted and the dealer fitted the decals from new, I assume as a way to jazz up a base model (or second to base model) which is what she is.

The Maestro was launched on 1st March 1983 so Milly is quite an early one. We covered over 260 miles today and she behaved very well, only having a slight grumble on the M40 and that was in a 15 minute jam, and even then, once I had talked to her and we had both done our deep breathing exercises, she was fine. She is a great example of a Cowley built car and will be perfect for next year which is Cowley's Centenary.

She has had two owners from new, I'm her third. The first owned her for 25 years (he passed away) and the second sold her to the dealer I bought her from. I met the second owner last weekend at the NEC so I now know most of her story and he is going to give me the trophy that she won in 2010 :-) and also any other paperwork that he can fine. He is going to put me in touch with the family of her first owner as they were fond of her and would like to know what has happened to her. Her mileage is approaching 36,000.

Are there any other Maestro owners on TMF?

Needless to say, I love her to bits and will now stop prattling on and post some pics of her :-)

Her somewhat unfortunate sticker! Her first owner worked for the BBC in London, so maybe he got it from there. We think this was but on in the 1980s and is how part of her and that era, so it will be staying and we think it might damage the dash if we tried to remove it. My husband is trying to call her Jimmy - I don't think so! >:(

A photo of the dealer, Dave Fox with her. He was great, very helpful and a pleasure to buy a car from. We exchanged some great car stories - how he and his mates are still alive after some of their antics - I don't know! He's going to try and make it down to The Pride of Longbridge as he has a genuine interest in Longbridge/BL.

******* me that brings back some memories from my child hood in my Grandad's Montego Estate. They look ridiculously similar, any way. Congrats on another car!

LOL. Think there is only around 300 estate montego's left. Grandad Scrapped his in 2003/4, just before he died, he used it as his market car, was an epic work horse. All I can remember about it is the interior was grey velour and the exterior was white and it had roof racks.

My old Montego - really really love it. I was so sad when it went (it was dissolving). I had it from 1995 until 2003 and from 28,000 miles until 160,000 miles

Tanya Have you got any interior pics of the montego?

I haven't seen one the inside of one for about 10 years, so the last time was when I was six.

Mums had the grey dash & seats too, The montego wasn't a bad car really. I was 10 years old when mum had her H reg one, dad fitted a towbar & roof rack, fitted 2 extra seats in the boot
:). Wax oil'd it all. Mum sold it when I was about 15. I'm 22 now & still see it about now & then in a village not far from me. The lady who bought it was a farmers wife & by the looks of it I would say its never been washed & carries bundles of hay around for its keep
The arches have seen better days now too ha ha :)

Also my mate had a lovely meastro for his first car.
Had Mgf wheels, Cherry bomb exhaust
Spot lamps & skimmed head, it was really nippy, sounded great too. I also remembered him fitting twin webbers But the bonnet would not close with them fitted :(

I think mine had a grey dash and grey seats too. Mine was a 1994 and it seemed to be when Rover were going though their 'grey interior' phase

Glad to hear that your old one is still alive and been useful - It's always good to hear about ones that are still going :-)
