k, spent a bit of time this morning tryin to fit the new speakers, but the only sound i can seem to get is a crackly sound coming out of one of the speakers?? heres some pictures of how i've put them in....

Posted Image
thats the one on the drivers side, that thing in the above picture did have the old speakers wire in it so iv jus put the new wire into it, this is the speaker that is crackling

Posted Image
this is the other one! the lil thing with the four wires going into it isnt there on this side so iv just slided those lil bits on to speaker, like the old one was?

any ideas why its not working?
cheers muchly, sian

do you mean one of them seems to be working, but not the other? Swap them over and see if it's still the same. If it is, then somethings not quite right with thw wiring. If it still happens to the same speaker, then it may be broken!

i think it's a wiring problem as the sound getting im getting out of the one speaker is similar to what i was getting before i got the new ones! if that makes sense?

anyone any tip on what the wiring should be like?/how i can look at the wiring..........sorry i know nothing!

Hmm, well if you had the same problem before the new speakers, then I'd say it's probably something wrong at the head unit end.

Whack the head unit out, and snap us a pic of the wiring behind it. I'm guessing theres a loose speaker wire, or a couple of the wires have been swapped over.

How many speakers do you have? and what head unit do you have? (just the make, model isn't that important!)

Ah. Errm, ermm, where is it? in dash? under dash?

You probably got a "tool" with the head unit. there'll be matching holes/slots in the main unit (you will probably need to take off the face if it's one of those removeable jobbies). once the tool is "locked" in place, pull on the unit and it should slide out.

That's if its in dash. If it's under dash, you may be able to see up to the wires if you crawl on under there!

its sort of in the dash area, but i dont have a dash, so it's jus in the housing that it used to sit in under the dash but upside down, if that makes sense?
might just show it to man......im too confused

it makes perfect sense! Thats the "under dash" I was referring to.

Where are you? I'm sure there'd be someone willing to pop round for 10 mins and have a look for you!

k, i've been routing around again today (im not going to give up easily!!) and i THINK i may have found the root of the problem (MAYBE)

for starter, i found this.......on the passengers side speaker there is a wire that i've ben connecting to the speakers, and the today i managed to dig this out...so it's not actually been fully connected.....(it's the wrong way rond tho! imagine it rotated 90 degrees clockwise ;D )

Posted Image

and then, does anyone know how i can get inside here to 'reconnect' the wires?

Posted Image

then, i followed the wires through the car, lifting up various bits of carpet, to find this little lot.......

Posted Image

there two different types of 'wire connectors' do u think this would make any difference? tempted to change one of them just so i know they're both the same! also i noticed that this foot well is quite damp, so they've been damp aswell (hoping the dampness will be the residue of the leaking windows, which are now fixed)

do u think, if i went round all the 'connections' of different wires, trimed some of the plastic casing off and reconnected with a fresh 'middle' bit of wire it might fix my problem??

also, iv tried to pull my head unit out and it wont budge, so at the mo the only view i have of behind the head unit is this one......

Posted Image

so im tempted to try the wiring before resulting in bringing the head unit out!

any suggestions?

cheers muchly! sian

Sian, Don't know much my self but first of all the water would have caused buzzing and crackling and the connection is a simple spade connection. however with all the different wire connections you may wish to buy new cable and reconect the head unit and speakers as this will improve the quality anyway!!

From personal experience with Mini wiring (the silver Cooper in particular) - I would say it would be easier to replace the whole run of speaker wire from front to rear. If you can get the HU out you can see which wires go where, and locating the rear speaker wires on an ISO lead (which the JVC will have) isn't hard.

Halfords do some good quality lead for £4.99 (I've got about 30 foot of the stuff if you need any) which'll allow you to just re-wire the lot and get good sound quality, losing all of those nasty choccie-blocks and dodgy connections in the process.

If you want a hand doing it (takes about half an hour), I can pop up and help, I'm only in Ripley now. Up to you though.

ah, and those bits of wire you got with the speakers are what you've connected into the choccie-block?

In which case I'd definitely repace the wiring - those plugs (the big and little'un) are easy to buy and speaker wire is cheap (you can get everything you need from that yellow motor spares place in Eastwood). Running the wire through the car is a piece of cake, and I would lose those bits of wire that came with the speakers, just fit new connectors to the new speaker wires and bobs your uncle.

aye - the choccie block is that little white thing with the small screws thats about 6" from the speaker in the second pic down in your first post...

Yeah, the accessory place sells all the little bits and bobs like that, I was there recently they've got all the stuff you need, and if they happen to be out of stock just give me a call or whatever, I've got hundreds of them, and can show you how to get the wiring out etc (plus I'm self employed now so got a bit more free time during the day on weekdays).
