before i start, its worth pointing out that im 30, so im not entirely out of touch with the modern world, im on the net, i have a lap top, a nikon dslr, and im not a moron, nut......

a few days ago i went into carphone whorehouse to sort out my upgrade, or in reality what i was hoping was going to be more like a downgrade (tarrif wise at least)

i wanted the cheapest thing possible as i had previously been throwing money down the drain. i was paying £36 a month and using very little of my minutes and texts etc, and i never go on teh net from my phone either so that was being wasted too.

the cheapest i could get down to, whilst keepig my usage covered was £17 a month, which is great. the nest thing is what phone to get next, i wanted the simplest thing possible, as im not fussy about having anything fancy, as i break phones all the time, the older type seem to be more robust!

anyway i ended up with a smart phone, and it is just ridiculous how hard it is to use!

problem1,
yesterday i had a guy calling me to go and look at a job on his mini, and i couldnt answer the call! i had to delay the guy to go and pick my missis up and run her home. when i picked her up i asked her to call my phone from hers, and see if she could answer it, it took her ages to figure it out and she is a techy geek!

problem 2,
this evening i wanted to call and order us a chinese, as i didnt have the number saved in my phone i wanted to dial it in, i couldnt find the numberical keypad anywhere, and again had to get the missis to figure it out.

problem 3,
writting a text message is so tricky, big finger tips and little keys on the touch screen dont mix, but besides that im constantly having to guess what to press next. why there cant just be a button that says "send" when your done i dont know?

non of this is helped by the fact that the manual which comes with the phone is just one single sheet of paper, folded over a couple of times, it explains almost nothing other than how to open the case and get the battery and sim card in.

they did explain in the shop before i took it out that i couldnt change the phone if i "simply didnt like it" but i thought, whats not to like? its a phone, it makes calls and i can text with it? so i signed up for another 2 years and off i went.

i thought these things were meant to make my life more simple or improve it in someway, im ready to throw it out the window! even the most basic operation is so hard to do, is it just me?

Could you buy a "dumb phone" and use the SIM from your existing phone? Or is it locked to only work with their contract phones?

Also, you can probably download the manual online. I had to do this with my Samsung Galaxy...

Nothing is simple these day's especially the android phones..

Of all the phones I've owned my iPhone is by far and away the simplest, every thing is fairly obvious to get too.

If your getting a smart phone, i believe only the top end ones are worth getting. Galaxy s 3 or iphone depending on your preference. I've never seen a good budget smart phone. My mum used to get fobbed off with some shockers everytime. Im sure the guys in Vodafone shop used to wait for her coming in And give her the crappiest thing possible. But if you don't use it for the internet they are not worth getting at all.

I'd tend to agree with this. The contract on my iPhone 4 was up recently and looking around at cheap smartphones none of them impressed me. They were all downgrades from my iPhone with horrible low resolution screens and cheapo plastic cases. Basically the two choices I was left with were the Galaxy S3 or iPhone 5. I ended up getting the iPhone 5 simply because I prefer iOS. Jellybean is a very nice operating system too, so much smoother than older OS's (jerky animations are one of my pet hates) but a bit more complex to use.

HTC and Samsung budget smartphones are usually quite good. Generally just smaller, slightly less powerful models than there flagship devices. Ignore the hype about quad core processors in high-end smartphones, it doesn't mean the 1ghz single core processor in cheaper smartphones is bad. A couple of years ago that was good, iirc the iphone 3gs or 4 had similar spec to that.

The problem, I think, is what defines a 'smartphone'. When people think of smartphone they think of something like the iphone yet many of the entry level devices are just basic phones with a touchscreen and a facebook app. I'd stick to HTC and Samsung for cheap smartphones, they generally put a lot of the good stuff from there more expensive phones into the cheaper ones. And, read reviews beforehand, every brand sells rubbish phones.

 You sooo sound like my Mrs

Shes just got a Blackberry (which she insists on calling a Blueberry) a pretty easy phone to use that our 14 year daughter also has and is giving her lessons on

Its slow going ....she has to spell out and punctuate every text she sends, then sends them to the wrong contact or deletes them by mistake after spending 10 minutes carefully tapping it in

She cant cope with predictive text, meaning to send 'Okey Dokey' came out as 'Ok Donkey' which she sent to a heavily pregnant friend >_<

Hit google and read up on how to use it.......pleaseeee!!
