I did replace the head gasket on mine which I think sorted the issue but engine is now going for a rebuild so won't find out properly

No. Connecting the whole breather system as designed and stopping doing short runs will purge the water out of the system. The stupid filters that people put on do not help one little bit and just make it worse.
