You can't not force the drum on, it's the only way to get the drum on?

you should never force drums on. thats why you back the adjusters right off first. the shoes dont touch the sides when you put the drum back on. then once the drums are back on you adjust them up.

Have you got the adjuster slider bits in correctly. The tapered edge facing into the car

Yes they're facing into the car. The only way the drum will go on is with the shoes together so there's no other way it could go on? I'm not sure what else to do

They're as close as can be, they won't go any further and the brake still won't fit on

Measure the length of your wheel cylinder as I've had one that was too long some how before and had the same problem. It was only 4mm but it sorted mine out when I changed it

Just a quick note to the thread starter, can you put questions like this in the technical sections please. You'll be more likely to get advice from the technical doctors and gurus that spend their time in here. Not that there's anything wrong with the replies you've had so far.

Check your wheel cylinders are pushed completely back in before you put the drum back on.
Check your adjusters have indeed slid all the way in
Check you're using the right type of shoes (can't see that being the problem, but you never know)
Check that your handbrake is slacked right off at the cable, that your quadrants are free and that the arm that passes through the shoe is fully released and not at all seized

Failing that, you need to get someone experienced to pop around to help. There's not really that much that can go wrong with fitting rear shoes to be honest, so it's probably something obvious that you're missing really. Post up a piccie of the fitted shoes for us please.

Are the brake return springs sitting behind the shoes?

If they are on the front side they can cant the shoes over.

Yes! The wheels now spin freely after grinding a bit of the drum and the shoes themselves:) Now the brakes don't work properly... it takes several pumps to get them to lock on, they've been bled and stuff?

Grinding a bit off the drum worries me even more !!! We NEED to see a picture of the assembled shoes.... Meantime leave the handbrake cable disconnected - and adjust up the brakes till they lock - then back 1/4 turn.

Grinding the lip off a drum is pretty common really.....certainly aint ideal though. Please get someone to check over these brakes before it goes back on the road.
