
Kent 286 Timing

Just a quick question, do you time the Kent 286 cam in at 106 deg. after TDC or 103 deg.?
Been getting some conflicting information.
Engine spec-
10.5:1 CR ratio
Large valve extensively modified head
1.5:1 rockers
Will run some sort of electronic ignition after first run. Currently on the good ole points.

103 is fine, 104 is more common

Yup cheers. Im at 103 deg. But got told by someone that they are

103 is fine, 106 is the correct figure, consider a couple degrees of slack of the chain after it wears out (chain stretch) so you dial it in at 104 and it should be perfect
you'll never know how much the chain will 'strecth' so keep it at 103.
Your best bet is measuring the valve lift at overlap, you're looking for equal lift at overlap.

I always time a Kent cam in at 104 ATDC and it seems the chain will stretch most in the first 2000 miles by around 1.5 degrees. This means that the cam is timed most accurately between 1500 miles & 10000 miles. These figures will vary depending on the revs used. In a performance engine it's best to change the timing chain at around 15000 miles maximum anyway and a really well-modified and high-revving engine may well need a complete re-freshing at those miles anyway.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I need to time my 286 Kent cam tomorrow, I've got a DTI, but don't know how to do it. Is it easy? I did search but didn't find anything.

Nominal is 106 ATDC, but it's a good idea to set to 104 ATDC when fitting a new timing chain to allow for initial stretch.
