use a oil change pump straight down the dip stick hole.
I'll have to have a scout about in the garage for one, can't think that i've got one.

I've not started it up yet but it'll be smoking more than bob marleyi did this once in my mayfair... i was pulled over on route to a mini club meet by an enthusiastic police officer who mistook me for a white arrow

Gonna be the first thing I try tomorrow. Thanks guys, I'll let you all know how it goes.Place a container under the sump, undo the sump plug a bit as Rob Mac suggested and drain out about a pint of oil. Now fill up to MAX mark.
Damn my impatience.

Unscrew the oil filter, remove the HT leads and turn it over whilst it pumps out how much you want to remove.
That rings bells as a bad idea to me. One it will be messy and two, running/cranking an engine with part of the oil system missing is not gunna be good for flow or pressure.
Remove the sump plug to drain, its the easiest way.

at the max mark the oil is just over half way up the gears, to cause issues you'd need another 2" or so of oil in there which is probably getting on for a gallon.

it's the only way to get the oil out a lot of boat engines
