It won't matter much for tightening to 150ftlbs, only undoing stubborn nuts...

The force will be transmitted through each of the 2 selected gears as normal. It's the differing ratios that causes them to lock. 4th is the strongest, the nearest ratio you can lock with it is 2nd. The closer the ratios the less mechanical advantage one gear can have over the other. It is a bit of a moot point to hijack a thread over though.

As penance to the OP, if you want a box that doesn't leak (ok, leaks less), use the latest end cover gaskets with the blue "stripe" of encapsulated sealant and the bush 'n boot kit for the selector shaft.

or make sure the gasket mating surfaces are clean and flat. No amount of silicon will compensate for bits of old gasket or bent parts.
