I use 20w/50 because it's what recommended by the Oil Viscosity chart on the manual book for temperature ranging from -10 deg. Celcius to over 40 deg. Celcius. To be fair, my manual book was for a 1975 Mini and they specify EITHER a 20w/50 or a 10w/40. 20w/50 is being used just because I live in a hot climate country, where the thicker oil is much better for the engine, and also I've tried 10w/40 but the evaporation rate is pretty high (perhaps because of that high ambient temperature). So, I guess 10w/40 or 20w/50 are all good. Just don't forget to regularly change the oil and check the dipstick for oil loss.

Never seen any manual recommending 20w50 at -10°, meybe from 0°
20W50 is too thick cold at 5° let alone -10°

Should this "what oil" question depend on how well the engine was built in the factory? assuming some peoples engines have not been built by someone else or themselves? we can definitely say the differences in build quality will vary?

Its the engine tolerancies that dictate the need of a certain oil thickness, hte tighter the tolerance the thinner the oil.
Highly tuned engines have wider tolerancies due to higher temperatures etc.. hence the need of a thicker oil

Sea Vixens, Buccaneers and Hunters did the bombing:

On 28 March 1967, the Fleet Air Arm sent Blackburn Buccaneer planes from RNAS Lossiemouth to drop forty-two 1,000 lb bombs on the ship. Then, the Royal Air Force sent Hawker Hunter jets from RAF Chivenor to drop cans of aviation fuel to make the oil blaze.[2] However, exceptionally high tides put the fire out and it took further attacks by Sea Vixens from the RNAS Yeovilton and Buccaneers from the Naval Air Station at Brawdy, as well as more RAF Hunters with liquified petroleum jelly (not napalm, as HMG denied that the UK forces had stocks of napalm), to ignite the oil. Attempts to use foam booms to contain the oil were of limited success due to their fragility in high seas. Bombing continued into the next day before the Torrey Canyon finally sank.[3]
The wreck now lies at a depth of 30 metres (98 ft).

Perhaps it was full of 20w50 Castrol ;D

Could you use this oil in a mini !!!!!
