20/50 has to be the A Series tolerences - Gearboxs and Seals was never designed for modern oil, I had one come in to me leaking oil like the Tory Canyon
Ah, someone else who remembers the Torrey Canyon. They bombed the oil slick using Hawker Hunters if I remember correctly. We are showing our ages (again!).

Yes, they might have been DH110 Sea Vixens - a beautiful aeroplane from the best ever British aircraft manufacturer. There is still one flying from Bournemouth.

On 28 March 1967, the Fleet Air Arm sent Blackburn Buccaneer planes from RNAS Lossiemouth to drop forty-two 1,000 lb bombs on the ship. Then, the Royal Air Force sent Hawker Hunter jets from RAF Chivenor to drop cans of aviation fuel to make the oil blaze.[2] However, exceptionally high tides put the fire out and it took further attacks by Sea Vixens from the RNAS Yeovilton and Buccaneers from the Naval Air Station at Brawdy, as well as more RAF Hunters with liquified petroleum jelly (not napalm, as HMG denied that the UK forces had stocks of napalm), to ignite the oil. Attempts to use foam booms to contain the oil were of limited success due to their fragility in high seas. Bombing continued into the next day before the Torrey Canyon finally sank.[3]
The wreck now lies at a depth of 30 metres (98 ft).
Perhaps it was full of 20w50 Castrol

I was there that day to photograph the bombing for a German magazine. The staff journalist and I watched the first bombing runs miss the (static) target and questioned how we ever won the war.......
And back to the oil question, Opie oils have just sold me two five litre packs of Millers Classic performance 20w -50 for £34.98 Beat that!

LUBRICATION
The engine and other lubricating systems are filled with high-performance lubricants giving prolonged life.
CAUTION: You should always use a high quality oil of the correct viscosity range in the engine and gearbox during
maintenance and when topping-up. The use of oil not to the correct specification can lead to high oil and fuel consumption and ultimately to damaged components.
Oil to the correct specification contains additives which disperse the corrosive acids formed by combustion and prevent the formation of sludge which can block the oil ways. Additional oil additives should not be used.
Always adhere to the recommended servicing intervals.
Engine/Gearbox oil
Use oil meeting specification ACEA A2 and having a viscosity of 10W/30.
And the first workshop manual in 1959 recommends
10W/30
Approval also given for manual transmission only - Duckhams Q20/50
For Temperatures below -18C SAE 5W/20
Plenty of choice!
