Help...last Nipple... And Snap! Easy Out? Anyone Had Success?

As above. Ive acid dipped some metro 4 pots and I got all the hoses out and all the nipples till the last one :* it snapped.... any ideas on the best way of removing? Should I drill it buy easy out and try them or try drilling it and folding the bolt in on itself?

DO NOT TRY AN EASYOUT! Easy outs work great when there is no load, but in this case they simply will not work. They will snap inside and make the job 100 times worse (guess how i know).

Get some LEFT HAND drill bits, and carefully drill out the nipple, making sure you do not reach the bottom of the hole. When the walls of the nipple are thin enough, the twisting action of the drill should grab the nipple and pull it out if you're lucky.

If this doesn't work you need a pillar drill (or milling machine) to make sure the hole you drill remains central and possibly re-cut the taper on the bottom if necessary. then tap and fit a helicoil to finish the job

If your easy outs break then they are poor quality and time to buy some better ones, I have some which are 20years old and still all ok, I would use one and go carefully, done lots of broken bleed nipples that way, if you drill it be certain the drill is central as any off centre could wreck the caliper.

I had a look for some left handed drill bits on the bay too but cant find any.... ill have a google. Lol cheers for the advice mate

An easy out in the centre of the nipple has the outside diameter of about 2mm? The bleed nipple has the outer diameter of 7mm, and that snapped.. the easy-out would have to be made of something quite special to remove this bleed nipple.


I dont think I have ever had any real success with even the most expensive easy-outs

I've never had any luck with easy outs either and have snapped a couple, they were Snap On ones so apparently not poor quality. :rolleyes: I prefer the left hand drill bit method and with the bleed nipple already having a hole you should be close to bang on centre when drilling it out.

Heat as said above and go gently gently this is a delicate job no matter which method is employed, if you use heat remember the piston seals

Yeah I used them on a mates caliper (non mini caliper)

He had sheared it trying to take it off and he had it soaked in penetrating fluid the day before but it still snapped, I used a carbide drill bit then put some heat on and then the above and it started to move then stopped, so soaked it in oil in a tray then next day back on the heat and it started to drill out

When or If I can get the nipple out ill be replacing the seals anyway mate. But yea heat sounds good

This is one more vote against EZ-Outs of any size, type, make, or quality. Consider for a moment that you have soaked these calipers in acid long enough to soften/remove most the rust and some of that acid should have wicked into the threads. The bleed nipple is well and truly stuck. If it was going to come out easily it would be out now.

This is also another vote for left-hand drill bits in progressively larger diameters right down the center of the bleed hole. If anyone tells you to use a drill press (pillar drill) DON'T. The idea with left-hand bits is that they will spin the nipple up and out when they catch in the broken part. Up and out will cause the bit to break if held rigidly. Use a hand drill and steady hand.

If you cannot get left-hand bits, still try progressively larger regular bits. Stop as soon as you think you are close to the minor diameter of the thread. Then collapse and pick out what is left of the threads. Try to NOT have to re-tap the hole. Bleed nipples often do not seal in re-tapped holes (not because of damage to the seat but from a loose fit on the threads).

There are two repair methods to use if the threads become damaged. One is a repair kit that includes a special bushing and new nipple. You re-tap the caliper for the bushing and simply install it. They work OK. The other fix is to take a brand new nipple and grind the conical tip off so it is shorter and flat faced. Drop a clean ball bearing into the hole (2/3 the diameter of the hole) and then fit the flat faced nipple. The nipple will push the ball into the seat to close it off securely in place of the original conical tip.

That seems a vy good and logical answer. I wouldnt use a pillar drill as I wouldnt want to make a new path for the drill ether.
