If it is only a financial write off (not safety damage) some would just buy a near to being scrapped Mini of around the same age for a source of spares/v5 and rebuild it around that V5 without Cat C recorded on it................

My latest mini is a CAT C. Didn't know that when I bought it as I didn't get a HPi check but I suspected something as it was pretty cheap. I've got the receipts from when it was repaired by a specialist and it had a new front end on it but it's a 20 year old mini so no big deal that it's had a new front end. I have no intention of selling it so have nothing to worry about.

buy law the seller of a cat c must inform the buyer private or trade if this was not the case you can by law return the car for the full amount paid
also if you are the named person on the log book and rebuild you car it does not need a vic untill any items on the log book are changed

here's one to ponder if 2 minis go into the same garage for the same thing EG: new front pannel wings bonnet. but 1 because it's rusty and one for an accident repairs dont you think it wrong that 1 increase's in value and 1 decrease's in value

If its a nice clean solid car its really not going to be worth that much less than the same car that's not got a category on it. All mini's are at the age where almost all will have had some major bodywork done to keep them on the road. i'd be more worried about the repair quality than the category.

My Dad buys Cat C+D cars of insurance companies, repairs them and sells them on. Lots of the cars he gets only need new bumper from the scrapyard some paint and they are good as new. Takes very little to write off a car as the insurance see it as new everything from the car manufacturer.

I never knew the seller was legally obliged to inform the buyer, I only found out once the logbook came back with a foot note saying the car had been substantially repaired and ID checked. If I knew that before I bought it I would have probably pulled out but I'm glad I didn't know as I did buy it and I still think I got a decent deal and wouldn't ask for my money back.
