I've just had a pig of a job replacing the accelerator cable in my Mayfair - sorting out both ends of the cable was fine but the bit where the outer meets the engine bay side of the bulkhead has really confused me. When I took the old cable out it needed a real tug to budge, but the new one is kind of loose. It clicks in to the metal grommet-type protusion on the bulkhead but doesn't stay in there firmly and if I use the pedal a bit it comes loose. Is it meant to fix in here or does it not matter?

Help?!

Did the old outer cable have a metal ferrule on the end as per your new one ?? if not then you need to remove it from your bulkhead, I always apply a small smear of copper grease to the ferrule to ensure it doesn't stick again

Yes it looks like this:

Except it has silver ends, not brass coloured.

New one has silver ends, old one bronze. Otherwise they are identical

Does the return spring pressure not keep the outer cable in the furrel while working the throttle pedal? is the cable run smooth and the throttle pedal feel smooth in operation with the new cable?

The cable inner is not to long where it goes through the nipple on the carb and the long end catching on the heat shield/linkage? as this will cause the outer to come out the bulkhead nipple,

The cable ferrule should be fixed to the end of the cable, it should not be loose.

It is fixed to the end of the cable! It's not fixed to the bulk head, it just sits in the hole and is easily pulled out. That's what i want to know whether that's normal or not.

Just been for a drive and it's very revvy, nice! Smooth etc

Yes pretty mush, its not a tight fit, as stated above the spring and pedal hold it in tension that keeps it all together, also the adjustment should not allow it to move far enough to fall out

I think I'm ok then. It drives better anyway, I can blip the throttle and I shoot off, unlike before. It's quite fun/dangerous.

I guess the pressure from the spring keeps it in place, at least for now. Thanks for your help both.

That is not the ferrule, that could be called a boss but it is not a ferrule

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrule

Please also note that the correct spelling is Ferrule.

I've never heard of the word ferrule before today, but anyway I think the 'ferrule' is being pushed against the 'grommet' by the spring so my question is answered ;-)
