Ok can some one explain if you need a fuel return from the fuel rail on a forced induction setup,

yes and no.....

most injection systems have a regulator at the "far" end of the fuel rail that releases fuel back to the tank thus keeping the correct pressure before it....

Tank>>>>>>Fuel pump>>>>>>>injector rail>>>>>>>>fuel reg>>>>>>>>>Tank

but there are some systems (such as the Toyota MR2 iirc) where the fuel pump has a built in regulator with this system you can suffer from fuel heating as it dosent circulate the warmed fuel back to the tank to cool off....

Tank>>>>>>fuel pump>>>>>>>injector rail

Ok what effects would you see if the fuel in the rail gets to hot.

Vapor (air) locks, if the fuel gets warm enough the lower boiling point components will boil and fill the rail with gas and the engine wont run.

OK.

Ive not had any issues so far even on a hot day but do you think I should run a return pipe to the tank. also has anyone ever used a fuel cooler..

never heard of a fuel cooler... run a pipe back to the tank, eases the pressure on the fuel rail

most modern day rally cars use fuel coolers. and so do a lot of turbo diesels.

Ive heard fuel temp can have a big effect on the octane rating of fuel.... but have not been able to find any solid evidence of this. apparently the old group A metro turbo race cars used to run a 10 row oil cooler as a fuel cooler.

I thought of doing this but would petrol be ok in a oil cooler??

Yes it would be fine. I would run the return line through the cooleras it's not high pressure. There fore if you hole the cooler then you don't have to stop before the end of the rally stage. It will also cool the fuel in the tank which will cool the pressurized side. Another way is to use copper pipe on the outside under the car. This aids cooling of the fuel where the rubber hoses hold the heat.

Chris.
