MPi's left the factory rotten, cheap metal!
According to an ex-longbridge employee, apparently it was more to do with a change in production, meaning the shells were stored outside in the rain, between their actual manufacture and then going onto the assembly line. So you could say that they were actually rusty before they even went into the factory!!
Then add in the cost savings made on paint coverage and rustproofing on the later models and you have a recipe for a corrosive disaster
is this actually true? I've often wondered why the later minis tend to rust quicker, heard different stories, lack of anti corrosion treatment, shells left outside.....
I've looked over a few MPi's now with a view to buying and I've been genuinely horrified by the extent of corrosion I've seen. When you consider that these were the last models made, the corrosion I've seen is about comparable to that you would expect on other minis that are around ten years older!
