Hi all

I've been told that you can change the cam on a 998 engine without removing the engine, does anyone know if this is true? If so does any body know the procedures in doing such a job?

Regards Nige

You have to cut a hole in your inner wing to remove it. Its possible on the 998 because the have tappet covers so you can take them off and stop the cam followers from dropping into the gearbox.

right, this is gonna sound well daft but I reckon you could do it on a 1275 in situ too. I was thinking you could take off the rocker shaft, pull out the pushrods and put some long thin magnets down the pushrod holes to hold the followers in place????
Then you could do the 'cut hole in inner wing................' like on the 998s?

What are the standard followers made from? I assume they would be ferrous? lol

its a trick visard used on his test engine on the dyno, look in his book.

doing the cam in situ is possible, the proceedure is listed on www.ime.org.uk.

Personally i dont think its worth the ballache as removing the engine is almost as easy when u factor in timing up the cam etc.

The magnet thing does work, as does taking the engine out and turning it upside down to stop the followers falling out, but the point is that one should really be fitting new followers, which means gearbox off.
