I don't know why we expect bolts to be cheaper than other bits of hard wear. When they are it's only because they can be knocked out by automated production plants in zillions. Not a dig, I'm just the same.

Some time ago I looked at buying a bolt making machine, it could churn out 27,000 per hour of the smaller sizes. you would need either a lot of money or some company that is willing to hold the stock.

27000 bolts that require just 25mm of bar = 675 metres of bar stock. per hour ?

You can get 5 tonne coils delivered, they would last a fair while :-) and at over £1000/tonne :(
