I have no idea. I guess didn't put too much on, but ensured I packed it into the thread of the stud as much as I could. Engaging the thread I guess did the rest.

I would say that this will seal the thread ok, it takes a fair amount of water pressure to move sealant within threads.

Yes I would say it's sealed the thread, I just imagined it also sealing the head to the shank of the stud further up!

Hi dan
It was my intention to just seal the thread! it's kind of how thread lock works, but with sealant. The only downside of doing this was that I was unable to clean out the threaded hole on the block. But so far the sealant has worked, so only time will tell if it will hold for the future. The head gasket was always doing its job as it should, just that the leak was very annoying.

I guess that if the gasket was going to fail, you would be seeing some signs already. Anyway, it is only a small risk, as a head gasket is just a minor nuisance if it goes. But after 6 months or so you will know for sure.
As for sealing the threads. my Minis all leaked at various stud and bolt holes, commonly two or three head studs and the top steady bolt. They could have cast the block with more metal, so holes of the correct depth to achieve the strength would not break through, but then there would be less space for the water to circulate, so more chance of overheating, which is a far bigger pain than having to seal minor leaks. I used PTFE tape on mine, nothing wrong with Hermetite or even silicone if someone has the same problem and has some to hand, as the coolant pressure is not all that high. I would not use studlock, as you may want to get it out again.
