Hi everyone, I had my mini restored last year, it was fully made rust free? and re-sprayed, however the roof guttering's paint is already flaking and is rusting, it doesn't seem the paint hardened or the rust was not all gone, what do you think the best thing is to do, thanks. Posted Image

Take it back to the supposed restorer.

The paint there is incredibly thin.

it isnt thin, it was just incorrectly prepared & the primer they used is wrong
take it back for a winge as that shouldnt happen so early on!

you can also tell they didnt sand it down, was it a bargain price?
the labour to prep well is astronomical :o

well that wasnt rust free, looks like they have primered or fillered over rust then painted it, and clearly chipped off and thats as you see it now, I would be taking it back for an explanation and "its a mini they rust" isnt a decent explanation thats just a shortcut and bodged

he left it quite late and we went back to see him as was nearly my birthday and it was no where near done and then we went back just before my birthday and it was complete, there are also other parts where rust is coming through but he did say he didn't charge the full hours he spent doing it though.

You can see they have done one quick blow over the primer, you can see the layers. And that is the gutter, where it would be thinnest, I bet if you put a paint depth gauge on the roof, it would be 70microns and lower.

should have been sanded, high build etch primer, sanded, couple of colour coats sanded, lacquer, sand etc.
if it was done correctly and prepped correctly then it would stick to the metal

but i do forget at 16 you do know everything :mmkay:

Technically as its rusty really if you were doing it properly then you would be replacing metal then etch primed, high build etc etc ;)

too true!
but a year ago it probably was bare metal,
i'd see what it was like after a good seeing to with 80 grit :D

but defo take it back and complain nicely, pretty easy cost effective job to remedy so im sure they wont mind :)

No need to be sarcy now. He doesn't claim to know everything.

Back to the problem in hand. Take it back to the restorer definitely.

I shall be visiting him tomorrow the thing is he didn't charge us that much for labour really, this pictures you see are after I took all the loose paint of. I'm sure he will help, he has probably read this topic, and he is a nice enough guy so i'm sure he will help.

The other issue around the roof gutter is that it's a notorious place for paint dust and residue from prep work to collect. If that dust and residue isn't cleaned away thoroughly before respraying, the new paint won't adhere properly and will either lift, or allow moisture to get beneath causing corrosion and the paint to flake off.
