I'm a fairly novice person to be replying but if I were going to do it I would expect to see unburnt fuel on the plugs. Maybe it's worth trying the fuel cut off/inertia switch on the bulkhead?

For an SPi quite simply you can take off the air filter box and be presented with the injector (the yellow dome) and the fuel/air mixing area. You can watch the fuel coming in at that point, albeit for a brief moment.

if you have the standard airfilter im sure you are fine when removing and starting the car to see the injector.
but if you have a K&N like myself, from previous experiences when you take the airfilter off and turn on the ignition the ecu will sence the change in humidity of the air and put a fault code on the ecu. the only way this can be removed is by using a diagnostic machine.
obviously if its stock then im sure you are fine but i am not 100%.
