as above i contacted the manufacturer at lunch time and the response was

 

"Sorry but you were misinformed on this.
You don’t take the rubber out at all the milled edge of the Deflector just fits into the same slot the widow runs up into and the bottom edge of the Deflector sits on top of the door frame down by the bottom edge.
I have attached some extra fitting instructions and a fitting movie to help."
