Ok. Balancing needs sorting then. AC, you're reputation goes a long way, so PM sent.

Wow, 2 months since last update! Took a long time to get flywheel booked in somewhere, posted, lightened, balanced and returned, but all done now and the engine's finally looking like an engine:

Finally getting close to getting it back in the car again.
Only question at the moment is just a quick query on the cylinder head? Should I carry on and fit that next, or leave it till the engine is back in the car? Not sure what will be easiest/wisest.
Cheers for all the help so far people.

A couple more hours and I just might have across worthy car again.
We've got to set the tappets, replace a CV boot and get thecrestvof the wiring hooked back up, obviousky getvthe fluids topped up and beld in properly, and then Alfie should be ready to go.
Very excited.

Good news: Alfie lives again. Friendly mechanic from CRM AutoSolutions came back this evening to get the last few bits set up and I started running the engine in.  Bloody fantastic to have the car running again.

Bad news: Alfie boiled over incredibly dramatically once we reached our destination this evening.  I think the expansion tank cap is knackered  - the temperature guage didn't hit high at all and a lot of water was forced out. I don't think the system is presurising, it's just bioling at 100 and spitting it all out.

New rad cap tomorrow and we'll try again.

Update for anyone that was following this thread and was interested on how things went:

Got everything sorted and back together after the last post and attempted to get the car running again. Sadly, everything wasn't quite right as the oil pressure light never went out.  Scared me silly for a while and ended up getting the car recovered to the garage I'd been using.  The engine had enough oil pressure to keep the oil moving, but not enough to put out the light, so no damage was done thankfully. Engine had to come back out though and be separated again to look for the problem though.  Turned out there were 2 issues - one was my fault :( - the O-ring had been squashed slightly when I put the box back on, but the pick-up line was also cracked.  It cost a chunk of cash, but I had the repairs done and everything put back together.  Oil pressure light went out.

But the idler gear started knocking in neutral.  Another engine out job. Idler had to be reshimmed. More expense, but I had to see it all through. Had the work done, and all seems to be fine now, except for one last niggle - the battery won't hold charge. Tax ran out a while back so I've sorned the car for the winter and I'll use the break to figure out the battery issue, following some pointers and advice already found on the forum.

Slowly getting there. Fingers crossed Alfie will be back on the road in the Spring.
