Hi all.
Been setting up the Mini, and I was wondering, does anyone have a tuning guide?

I am using a HIF44, which has been recon'd so its in need of jetting. Only want it so its somehwere near ok, then I'll send it up to the MOT'r to get it fine tuned :proud:

It's called a Haynes manual.:proud:

SU carbs do not need jetting.

I think its pointless me going out soending £15 on a manual, that I'll only need for the carb tuning!

Ok maybe jetting wasn't the word for it...

colourtune will do it!!

i set mine up(tis a bit lean but it'll do) and the co was .28% and the HC was 365 PPM

I have a Mini manual yes, but not one that shows how to tune a HIF44 carb... only HS2/4 or H4's

I have no idea which hose goes onto which nozel etc... (new to HIF carbs :proud:)

Thanks for that... now I know why the car was soooooooooo rough on the way home, I put the fuel hose on the wrong hole! opps lol

Some how it did.

Bit unsettled, it would rev high (3k rpm) then settle (500rpm) then back up again!

Couldn't put my foot down, as it would either cough and spluter, or just pop and slow down! lol

It got me home, thats all I needed it to do. Took the head off etc today, to have a look to see if anything may need doing, but all is well, swaped the alley inlet yo one where I could actully get to the middle manifold bolts... just need to plug it all back in, and tune it up.... and then I can make a move onto the inside! :proud:

Cheers for the pic, I think I am fairly sorted now, with the Mini Manual I think I can cack handedly tune the Mini in now :xxx:

All SUs are pretty much tuned the same way. Just remember that as you have a screw rather than a bolt head to turn for mixture, where the manual talks about flats on the bolt you need to use 1/6th of a turn for each flat. Other than that they're pretty similar, the tuning plateau will still be the same for an HIF as it is for the HS and you still need to come two flats (2/6ths) back from the end of the plateau. That will make more sense when you read the manual, check the figures though as this is all from memory.

Do remember that simple tuning goes out of the window once you have modified anything. The standard needle will only give the right fuelling for a standard engine, once you change things the fuelling could be off and you can't tune for that at home unless you really know what you're doing. Since it sounds like there's lots of changes made to this engine a rolling road session to fettle the needle is a good idea. Lean spots can mean holes blown in piston crowns.
