HI guys this is my first proper post and i need some advive, ive got a 998 auto mayfair 1991, with air con from japan, its my first car so im converting it to manual. I have picked up a second hand engine, when i removed the head on the manual engine i found the bores where lipped, there not huge but they are there. I was woundering what the next engine size is up from the 998 is because i am thinking about getting it borded out and then oversizes pistons rings ect. Do you guys think it would be cost effective to do this or just use another block. cheers sam

Is it actually a lip or a build  up of carbon...

biggest cost is the pistons and rings, the boring will be about £50 - £100

normally go up in 20 thou increments

20, 40 , 60 ...

If you can get a good 998 block then that would be cheaper. You can get them for under 50 easy!! Remember it may still need work (honing, cam bearings etc) so you still may need to send it away

The bores arnt lipped with carbon we are pretty sure its the actual block, but when we ran the engine up on the floor it wasent blue smoking at all, but the thing is when the car is on the road it will be in daily use so i want everything to be right if you know what i mean :)

My advice would be to rebuild the engine. You could buy another block but as has been said this one could be in the same condition. Rebuild it and you know exactly what you have. But if funds are tight then there's a running engine in the for sale section. Can be seen running.
