Just a quick heads-up, took my mini in for MOT yesterday and it almost passed.

Fail was because 'battery insecure' as there was no battery clamp fitted. In the mini this is the bar which goes across the top of your battery in the boot or some other device to stop it falling out if the car is upside down...

Apparently this is one of a host of new MOT requirements which have come in recently.

It's not new at all, the battery has always had to be tied down.  I had an Astra fail for that just after I started driving.  I think there is a new aspect to it that means they actually check now where they didn't in the past though.

Battery being insecure only become a failable item as of the middle of march. Along with these items.

I definitely had my Astramax fail for that in 1997, I remember going scrapyard shopping for the clamp.

Is it correct that if you have a boot liner then the MOT'er isn't able to remove the liner to check the battery? I've never had a strap on the top of my battery, but its a 075 type so it only just fits in the battery box! aha

If the boot liner can't be lifted out easily, then is it not securing the battery itself?

If you have a standard 038 theres quite a lot of space around the battery so it could move about, and the boot liner doesn't fit flush with top of the battery. That's what I found anyway.

Yea I was kidding  ;D   The strap is the proper way but as we know, they are good at going missing.

I made my own strap out of some ally strip and two nuts and bolts. Put in so well, I'll never get the battery out. :)

It was never a fail before the changes. It was pass and advise.

It only become a fail when the new lot of changes were rolled out.

If the battery is not seen/visible due to boot board kit etc, then the tester cannot inspect it and would possibly note this on the advisory section.
