Auto electricians they say:

"That starter's totally burned out, didn't you smell the smoke?"

Totally scrap unit.  Waiting to hear if they can rebuild another unit they have on the shelf, or if its cheaper to grab one form minispares on Saturday.

Auto electrics never got back to me, so they can keep the scrap starter.
As we were running out of time to get her fixed ready to go to our body shop, I've picked up a new starter from Minispares today and installed that. Until we can replace the loom I've run a 17amp cable as a new ignition switch lead alongside the loom, and wired in a fuse holder with 15amp fuse.

1st attempt at a restart didn't go too well as the battery had run down, but after an hour's charge I tried again.
Fantastic results. The new starter fired the engine up instantly, without a single stutter - something that almost never happens on this car.
There isn't a single trace of smoke or unwanted heat.

Think I can say that, at least for now, the issues fixed. Thanks for all the help and advice guys!
