it could cause the timing chain to jump wrecking pstons etc, meaning you will need a rebuild

i drove mine like a nut for a month with it making that noise (excuse to do an engine rebuild) and it did no harm, just made an awful noise

 

best to get it sorted asap though incase anything goes wrong

its worth looking at the tensioner. my original 998 sounded exactly the same, although I have to admit, I left it for 6 months before investigating. it turned out to be half the nylon tensioner bouncing around inside the cam chain cover. its lucky really that it didn't knock a hole through the casing.if you do swap it, make sure you don't over tighten the bolt that locks the tensioner in place. it screws into the aluminium backplate and will thread really easily. a huge nightmare will ensue!

Ok.

 

I replaced the alternator and re-adjusted the tappets. Now it sounds like a mini again  :D
