As I understand it, I thought you could keep a standard SPI ECU and still modify the car so long as you aren't looking for anything more than 80bhp. Is this correct?

So I'd still be able to go ahead and get some engine work done without the ECU having a panic.

Cheers for the advice on the roller rockers, I've seen mixed reviews banded around about them but seems the majority is a negative.

i cant believe i am going to be the first one to say this, but convert it to carb and fit a dizzy in it.

i have had quite a bit of experience with spi engines and the injection system is a really limiting factor. i have converted quite a few of them and it really is very simple, and pretty cheap too as all the parts are available second hand and are easy to find. they are also allot easier to tweek afterwards too should you modify things further.

you can still get a mini to pass the emmisions too if your handy at setting them up, there is no law which says you have to keep the injection, just that it has to pass the mot.

after converting to carb/dizzy eveything else you do after that is just the same as it is for earlier cars, meaning you have more parts available for use, cams and such like.

you will also find the engine not only performs better, but it becomes much more responsive to what your right foot is doing too.

im expecting tons of abuse on this, but i stand by what i have said lol

Stay with injection in my opinion, start looking at companies that specialise like.....

this is a great bit of kit, and i completely agree this would be a good way to go, but for comparison.....

you could switch to carb/dizzy for much less money, and its easier to fiddle with for most folks. additionally, i converted an spi to carb early last year, and had it set up on a rolling road for the customer, that made 63bhp and was both totally standard, and not in teh greatest health at the time.

Have considered the carb option, am in no rush to start playing around as it's my daily drive and would like to keep it that way. Whats the deal with emissions with the carb switch?

Also, sorry to double post here guys, with that plug and play ECU, would that essentially let me tinker with the settings as if it were a carb setup? ie. If it took it to a rolling road they'd be able to play about with it for the best results?

Yes, you would be able to tune it, in fact you would have to get it set up on a rolling road, it will probably come with a basic map but to get the most out of any mods a rolling road session is in order
