Im afraid so, unless your good with a knife/dont want to keep the carpet. But then it wil need to come out to get the carpet back in.
Its quite an easy job to do. Drain the coolant system, disconnect the two hoses (and capture any further fluid) and the two pipes going to the window vents, then thers two screws at the front holding it to the lower dash rail then 1 or 2 nuts to loosen and it can be lifted out.

Some radiators have a drain plug fitted to them and some blocks have drain plugs, but usually you have to pull the bottom hose off the radiator. That said, there will still be some fluid in the hoses and the matrix so its best to put a tub in the car when you remove those hoses.
Oh and dont forget to have the heater valve open :)

Autosmart tardis. Designed t remove tar from outer bodywork and it dissolves it in an instant. USe ina well ventilated area though!!!

As tamworth said, a heat gun softens it up nicely, and then just use a good wallpaper scraper or similar to get rid... For the bits that were left behind, i used a 4 1/2 wire brush on an angle grinder, but then i wanted the floors back to bare metal.
