If you do hear from the insurance company, just make sure you don't let them take the car away for any reason. If they want to inspect it get them to come out to you

You're not obliged to make a claim, but you are obliged to let your insurers handle any claims against you if you don't want to risk invalidating your policy. What details did you exchange? If you're lucky the truck owners may not even bother to claim, declaring accidents, even if you're not at fault, can bump up your renewal fee by more than the cost of a couple of trailer lights. If they do offer you a cash settlement, get it in writing that you are making a full and final payment - or pay cash and keep it so you can deny all knowledge of ever bumping in to them. If they end up claiming against your insurance, consider if it's worth your while claiming for your Mini too. You'll probably be waving goodbye to any no claims discount anyway.

Most importantly keep hold of your own car, you're not obliged to accept their first offer, or any they make, and they can't concoct recovery and storage charges to try and force your arm if they don't have your car.

You should really report the accident to your insurer. If the tp make a claim against you, your ins co will have some details. If they do claim , an engineer may be instructed to inspect both vehicles on behalf of both ins co's. Did the tp record you details at the scene of the accident? As for your vehicle, it will only become the properrtyy of the ins co if you calim for the damages for your vehicle. If you follow that route and they offer you money you can buy th salvage back. For example the PAV of your vehicle is £3000 & salvage is worth £150 then you will be offered £2850 and can buy the car back for £150. PAV= pre accident value.

If it were me, with your knowledge of body repair, I would not claim on your ins co for your vehicle. Also, if TP make a claim against you, they may go through an accident management company. This is where is gets a bit **** as the cost fo the claim will increase dramatically as there may well be hire charges for tp replacement vehicle while his is in for repair. Even more so if the inspector deems his vehicle undriveable. There could even be loss of earnings.

If you need any info, let me know and I will see if I can help. If you can get me the reg of the vehicle, I "might" be able to get you the owners details ..........

Cheers
