Fossy,

I to live on an island but there’s no mini parts shop,

its not all about money you pay for what you get,

if you replace with a genuine part which has been proven to work, and not a Patten part you will keep your mini more (lol) reliable . More driving more fun, unless you like fixing it every weekend.

John (off to the beach 30*)

100% true - I buy the best that I can get hold of.

I understand and sympathize about budgets, but if you can't afford a tenner difference in price, then it's a recipe for a disaster.

Many thousands of years ago I used to try and do the same thing - brakes were worn out when the backing hit the discs and tyres were beyond further use when the canvas showed through. The result? Numerous little bumps and chats with the men with funny shaped heads and a rack of endorsements.

Get older and wiser and realize that you can't run a car on the cheap - something has to give.

I would have got the genuine parts, I just didn't know, the fact that minisport said genuine spec I thought they were, and that they quoted the timeken part number, but alas such is life

Believe me I know the difference between genuine and none genuine

And let's be realistic it's not just a tenner with a mini, so you do have to budget, like I did, I haven't just paid for new bearings, I had 400 to spend on new suspension, shocks, ball joints, bushes, etc etc, so I fitted the bearings in my budget, next time I now no the difference so I can work around and keep it within my budget.

Send them back to minisport - if enough people do it they'll get the message.

Indeedy, you should get a full refund if they aren't fit for purpose. What would "original spec" mean for a wheel bearing anyway? You could hardly make it very different if it's to fit in the same place - though it appears they even failed at that. I wouldn't get too hung up on genuine parts, Rover went bust and the Mini's been out of production even longer. Some stuff will be being sold that has nothing more in common than the trade name with the original item, other stuff will come from the same factory that subcontracted to Rover but now supplies somebody else.

A better term would be OEM.

As for this imported junk parading about as "original spec" - it just means that if you're lucky, it may fit in the hole without machining.

There is nothing original about it.

Well, that tells you three things. First, perseverance gets you there in the end. Second, Timken bearings are best, even if not the cheapst to buy, they will be cheapest in the long run. Thirdly, you know where not to buy spares in future, the place that sells cheap Chinese junk.

The Chinese make some very good and some very bad stuff. You mobile phone almost certainly comes from China and is probably well made, but almost all of their bearings are not, and never, ever trust a Chinese high tensile bolt.
