Well of course I completely forgot about this... if anyone is interested, the problem was corroded porous fuel lines! As it was a diesel, with the injection pump at the engine, the fuel line going from tank to engine is always at negative pressure, as the pump in the engine bay is sucking the fuel all the way from the tank. Henceforth, the line would suck air in only whilst the engine was running, but wouldn't leak (noticeably anyway) when turned off. No wonder I never fixed it, I never thought to consider that, but at least now I know for the future.

That car dealer that bought it off me replaced the fuel lines and it ran like a champ again. I know it's had at least two more owners after him, so this car doesn't half move around!

Fingers crossed it's still going strong out there. :D

Well it's got an mot at the min so guessing it's still going!
Really like the retro French boxyness, my first car was a mk1 pug 106 and I loved it even though the brakes were shocking!
My parents have a Saxo diesel with a similar cut out issue with air in the fuel so I will mention it to them :)

There is something about French cars that attracts me to them, particularly Citroens. I think it's just that they're so different and innovative, even if some things are weird and didn't really work! On that note, I actually bought another old Citroen a couple of months ago, I haven't done too much with it yet and I haven't started a thread on here yet, but it is going to be a fairly involved project...

Citroen CXs - never has a family car been so amazing and frightening at the same time! Time for a new thread when you start this one Otter!  ;D
