Hi there!

So ive had a problem with my mini recently its a 1.3 by the way.

The battery died so i thought i needed a new one, i replaced this and again the battery ran out on me! The car just cuts out at random points. It will start again immediately with a bump or jump start so ive had lots of random people pushing my car for me haha.

So ive searched on here used the guide that someone posted and have done the following:

  • Check the earth straps which all appear fine, i then put a jumper lead directly from the negative battery to the engine just in case and no change in any of the other tests i did.

  • Checked the voltage on the alternator which jumped around but never went up to the recomended 14.4v or anywhere near is more went from 8 - 12 and fluctuated constantly, so i thought it must be the alternator, changed this and no difference. I have power at the main two points but not the lower earth point.

  • Looked into this more and the red alternator light is not illuminating with the ignition on (not the car on just the ignition), ive tried to earth the alternator directly and still no joy so i thought it was the bulb. changed the bulb for a known good one and.... nothing!

So ive come to the conclusion that the fact the light is not illuminating is causing the alternator to not charge hence why is just cuts out and then will not start at all, ive tried to check the wiring and it all appears fine around the starter motor where i have read it can cause issues i also scotch locked a cable from further down the cable and grounded this directly to see if the light turned on and no joy.

I am now at a complete loss of what to do! i cant drive the car as it just randomly cuts out, well not randomly it actually chooses the worst places such as the A40 or every traffic light going !! :P

Thought id see if there was anyone who could help, i have searched on here already!!!

Thanks! Lets get my babooshki going again! I love my mini and missed the ace cafe mini meet last week because it cut out on me :( :(

The ignition light is the problem.

It's a pretty simple system

key on supplies a 12v feed to the light, the negative/earth side being the wire down to the alternator.

so 3 areas to check

12v positive getting to the light when key on

continuity on the cable from light to alternator.

is the bulb OK

Also the alternator doesn't need any extra earthing

Bulb is fine i double checked with a known good one.

So can i run a seperate wire from the dash, its the brown/yellow for the alternator iirc to the alternator earth, i think i tried this and nothing so it has to be the 12v positive, how can i check this>?
