Hi Motorsport fans.

Just a heads up.

Me and two other mini crews will be out on this weekends GP Memorial Rally.  Setting off from Preston area and goes through some classic Yorkshire Dales National Park roads.

They are looking for marshal's if anyone can help??  Think they feed you before and after the rally.....sounds good to me!!!

Check out  http://www.gpmc.org.uk/id7.html  for reg's and contact info if you can help.

Or just come along and have a look at some rally cars at the start and have a chat.

Good luck fella, it has a reputation for being quite a fast paced rally, on the go all night with no let up, it always gets good reviews from the crews so you should enjoy yourselves. There are some cracking roads up this neck of the woods.

I'm likely to be out marshalling, so if I see you I'll pop over for a chat at the start venue.

Hi Si.

Great to meet you last night...even though it was mega brief as we were plotting the route.

Hope you didn't get too wet and cold marshalling!!!!!!!

Awesome route and we both really enjoyed it.....even after drowning the car in a ford!  Wet feet all night!!!!

We finished 32nd Overall in the end.....dropped massive chunks of time from being stuck in the ford (cheers to speccies for getting wet feet too helping pull us out) and wrong slotted on on one section and did a large loop to get back on route.  But we managed to finish which was our goal....next year we'll be back.

Well done!

As we had no marshalling points in the first half we decided to go and watch at the ford, never been there to watch before otherwise I would have given you a heads up. You werent the only car to struggle with it though, a white mk2 escort conked out same place as you did but managed to crawl out on the starter motor, then several cars made it through keeping high revs but then just having no power to get up the hill. Was gutted for you though when the engine died as soon as you went it. I've got to admit I wasnt one of the speccies to jump in to pull you out, I didnt fancy a night on the fells with wet feet, I helped with the bump start instead, so was quite pleased when you got out to my marshalling point with the car sounding like it was running fine.

My Route Check was quite entertaining as well due to several cars not taking the 90 right as soon as they pulled away but instead going straight on and doing a 90 right to take a tour of the farm yard before coming back to me, I wouldnt mind so much but its a white that is used on just about every local rally and most of the people who got it wrong were regular comepetitors.

Hopefully see you out on another even fairly soon. Im aiming for Lake District Classic in a few weeks assuming I can get the car rolling roaded and MOT'd before then.

Cheers man.....felt like a real lemon conking out like that....but lesson learnt for next time.....high rev's to keep exhaust free of water.

I assume the other mini's were fine throught he water???  My car was way higher on the suspension than them too....rookie mistake!

Can't believe the lack of help offered at first...seemed like everyone was just gonna stand there as i went up to my knee's (slight exaggeration!) in water.  But then the real men (ha ha...only kidding) came in and helped out.  Big thankyou to everyone (including those who pushed on the bump start) for getting us going.  After a few miles the car was perfect....had flash backs of misfires from the last rally tho!!!!!

There were a few grumbles at the finish about your control....from the peeps who went on the detour of the farm yard i reckon!  Was already given a heads up at the start for a 90 right through the wall....but thankyou also for assisting. The grumbles weren't directed at you though...after all the course car would have checked you were located right.

Really nice to meet ya.....next time we'll have a proper chat.  If you're ever in this area and need a marshal, let me know.

Cheers Si.

The aim was indeed to finish so certainly did that....just!

We did drop silly bags of time though wrong slotting and teaching the car to swim!!!!  But we are both very much beginners and still learning so not a bad result really.  Could do with my wife going out on as many events as possible to gain experience....but no-one wants a beginner nav....they all want experts!  Plus i can't afford to do every event under the sun...also have to pick events carefully as don't want to do mini wreckers.  That said.....careful driving down really rough stuff and the clubman should be able to cope......just i don't know how rough the rough can get!

I thought there may have been a few complaints, but the course set-up crew put the boards up where they wanted them we just turned up and manned them plus any further back down the road and they would have been complaining because it'd be hidden behind the wall. There is really no excuse though for most of the crews because its a white thats used on most of the events. I think car 2 a white subaru and the red mk2 escort spoilt their rallies on that detour.

The white mini only just got through, by the the time it got to the other side it sounded like a two stroke lawn mower and had to sit there revving for a few minutes before it had enough power to get up the hill. The green one managed okay he pretty much came to a stop before entering, dropped into first, revs up and trundled through, be the way to do it next time I think.

At least you didn't do what a mate of mine did on one event - there was a ford with a 90 left immediately after it which his nav called correctly. Except he turned left too early & drove down the river....!! (& no it wasn't me, it really was a friend of mine!)

Well done for finishing, I think I did about 4 rallies before I actually managed to do so!

Cheers man....full report to follow soon  (honest!!).

So far we've done 5 rallies with one class win, one second and one DNF....not too bad really.  Plenty more to come too.....(not DNF's i hope!)
