Any (cheap) suggestions on how to get the outside of a carb looking smart?

Dirt cheap and great for ally. Best thing about it is that it can usually be found under the sink in the kitchen (if in doubt ask GF/wife/mother)

ah, kitchen/cleaning related. Will check with wife, GF and Mother !!

I recently cleaned a set of twin su's by striping them completely, removing all brass and steel. Then you can soak the main body float chambers and lids in a saucepan of boiling water with a dish washer tablet disolved in it, cleans inside out and everywhere then can finish them off with a bit of autosol on the outsides.

works wonders

Just checking, but is that on an ally carb? A steel wire brush would make a mess of an alloy surface normally.

Youre right i should have specified, you can get wire brushes in some sort of nylon wires, also carbon steel is not that agressive, certainly dont use those steel wires we use to get rid of rusty bits

I've heard of people using Cillit Bang,

thanks everyone; I'm liking the cheap ideas like WD40 and dishwasher tablets!

 

Just a shame I can't find the tube of autosol, but will try both on some old carb bodies and report back!

I have had a big tin for about 12 years and am about half way through it.

 

 

cheers; I've got a tube of autosol and also a tube of something similar, but chuff knows where it is; my garage is full on mini stuff!

 

I've got a nice tub of the bilt hamber metal polish too somewhere, which is great as a top coat on the paintowrk and cleans up chrome nicely, so might have to revert to that.

 

I'll try and do a scientific test in the next few days (in the interest of TMF members!) using WD40 and also the dishwasher tablet method, and report back with photo's!
