I have a 13" Toshiba laptop. Model: Satellite L630-16k. 

 

Processor is an Intel pentium P6200, 2.13ghz, 4gb ram.  

 

Due to its compact size, I know its not supposed to be the fastest thing in the world, but recently its been struggling to keep up with my normal web browsing. 

 

The fan is almost constantly running, and once i'm on youtube watching a video it starts getting warmer. The laptop has never really been able to watch a full HD video flawlessly, but I think thats just its low speed in general from new. 

 

720p videos though it gets really hot, the fan is in overdrive and the last few days it gets so hot it turns itself off! 

 

I downloaded a programme called realtemp to see what the CPU temp was and it averages 70-75 degrees C during normal web browsing with some music playing and maybe a video playing which it says puts the CPU at about 40-50% load. 

 

Once I play a HD video or have a few youtube tabs open, the temp shoots up to around 85 degrees and maxs out around 90. Once it goes a bit over 90 the laptop shuts off. 

 

What could be causing this? The vents on the laptop are not full of dust or anything and are clear and open to the air. I've got superantispyware which I run a few times a week and it always removes around 50-80 tracking cookies, I also have AVG anti virus. So I don't think a virus or spyware is the issue. 

 

Any ideas?

AVG clogs things up

 

Try to cut all the crappola that comes with it out ...and just leave the anti virus part on

Hoover the dust out the fan?

Get a can of compressed air and spray the fan will get all the dust out, you'd be surprised
Make sure when using the fan is covered
Programs wont make it automatically heat up

Don't have it tucked up on your lap where it can't pull push air thru.

Clear the vents etc as above.

Blast it fr spy wear and crap that'll be running in the background.

I've always had AVG since the laptop was new, this is only a recent problem so don't think its that. 

 

I'll try blowing the vents out with some compressed air and see how it does!

Bought a 7 inch usb cooler fan off ebay for about £3, laptop runs cool all day.

I have similar troubles with my HP Pavilion tx2000, common problem with this laptop and there are a few online guides as to how to remedy the issue with (if i remember correctly) tin foil.

 

Best bet is to look for online guides for your laptop but firstly check if anyone else has had the same issue and if no use go get one of those cooling fans.

Used a YouTube video to take it apart and cleaned all thefan and crap out,

Good as new after that

It seems Toshiba satellites in general are pretty prone to getting hot. 

 

May look at taking the heatsink out and giving it a vac out.

Recently had a similar issue with my desktop, would work fine but when under a heavy workload like rendering a video in sony vegas it would suddenly shut up, borrowed, some thermal paste of a friend and gave the heat sink a few dabs and never had any more problems

My old laptop sounds like the same make as yours, It used to switch off and over heat constantly, also, if I kept using it too much the screen would flicker or keep going grey.

 

I got two planks of wood only small ones, about 2" deep 2" wide and the length of the laptop, with a drawing board underneath that, it helped let the fans get more air or something good because it kept working for ages. Long enough that I saved up and got a new one so about two years?

Compressed air will only blow loose dust out (possibly further into the laptop). You'll probably find that there is a carpet of dust literally sticking to the heat sink on the inside where you wont see it from the outside. The only real way of cleaning it is taking the laptop apart and cleaning it out that way. I see this all the time at work (Computer Engineer)

Had a laptop like this at work (HP Pavillion) it was caused by the heatsink and needed to be replaced, also added a copper shim to take the head away more as recommended.
