When the Autolocks are bought new they come with a ring that attaches to the gear lever shaft with grub screws. The lock is then meant to hook around it and cant be removed. I had one on a car once that I had left in Tesco's car park when we went shopping. When we returned the drivers door was open and the handbreak lever had been kicked & bent  sideways to get the Autolock off, it was still hanging off the gearlever. Other security measures I had stopped the car getting knicked.
