OK - asked some people who have them and my second thought was right. The ST170 engine is not a Duratec despite what the rocker cover says - it's a Zetec with VVTi which means it uses the Ford 4-cylinder bellhousing bolt pattern.

i had a 2.0 zetec engine in a spitfire, i used a sierra cvh sump 1.8 zetec flywheel and a type 9 gearbox. cant remember what clutch plate i used( it was ford tho) it was running a dunnel engines ecu  twin 40 carbs and a cast exhaust manifold. rolling road said it was running 160bhp at roadwheels and operator predicted i could get another 10bhp if i went to 45's. the type 9 had no problems with this sort of power and the set up proved to be very reliable.

I got a lot of information googling the mk1/2 escort sites.
