Crikey! I thought oil was oil until I started reading this! Seriously though, I have returned to owning a mini after a 14 yr absence so had to check the Haynes manual before buying some oil. Haven't put any in yet (just been serviced and had oil change) but the recomended was "Multigrade, viscosity SAE 10W/40" so this is what I bought (Castrol Magnatec or something). Was this wrong? I have a '96 SPI Cooper.

Nope you will be fine with Magnetec but I would say a 20W/50 would be better for the summer months.
