It wasn't a problem in the 60's 70's 80's and so on. I don't see why it should be an issue now...........
As long the your nipper is in a proper chair thingy, secured properly, I don't see what the issue is........

i have always had the mini (first car)
it was off the road when they when they were first born but about 2 yrs old was when i started taking them out
as for crash protection, you want the whole car to fall apart just as the F1 cars do as the crash ends leaving you unscathed
as the mini is about 700kg, the energy involved is lower, then fitted with a roll cage, the rusty bits will fall off first

Thanks for everyone's views and thanks for all the congrats
Just to update the ST is now gone
The mini is staying for the time being, money providing (actually the old woman's idea!!!)
And we are now looking out for the new family driver...
If all goes well we will keep both cars but time will tell. But again thanks for the views, its been interesting to see different peoples opinions
Cheers

I was a bit worried when the helmet rolled out of the car! Luckily his head wasn't still in it!

I have to agree with Mab on this. You might be the safest driver in the world, but you can never account for others or accidents. As an adult I accept the risks and am also aware that except in the most severe of accidents, I am stronger and fitter and more likely to survive an accident than a small child. I would not risk my child's life in a mini just so I can still enjoy driving - thats incredibly selfish I think. You are responsible for the life and well being of that child. Don't get me wrong, I know there are plenty of children injured in modern cars as well, but its an unfair comparison due to sheer numbers. In fact, based on numbers distorting it, the classic mini might in fact be one of the safest cars to transport your child in!
I would buy the safest box on wheels I could get. Finances allowing I would still keep the mini for driving enjoyment.
I have no doubt that a mini could easily be used to ferry a couple of kids around with enough practicality.

Minis are do-able unless you're easily brainwashed into carrying everything and the kitchen sink, like most first parents. Our baby is 11 months now and we manage just fine. We have a changing bag and a carrier bag of food and that's about it. For carrying baby we use a cloth wrap, it's ten times easier than pushing a great big pram about and takes no room at all. A bigger car would make life easier but it's definitely do-able in a mini.
This is the way to do it and the way we did it.
Never missed a beat with the car on the basis that "if it won't fit in the Mini we don't need it".
Pushchairs are REALLY annoying and when I look back at how much time kids actually spend in them compared with how much time I spent
lugging them about, getting them in and out of cars... Arrrgggh...
I've got three kids and by child two I'd realised:
It's a marketing thing - a peer pressure thing - you really don't need a trillion dollar pushchair - you just need this.
It's a genius piece of design, weighs nothing, fits across the back footwell of a Mini, goes in and out in seconds,
goes up and down like an umbrella - wonderful. Save your money, get one of these from eBay and never join in with
the "we must have everything brand new" or the "we must lug the kitchen sink around with us" brigade.
We made it through the ice age without JoJoMamamBebe and without Mothercare.
Get a cloth wrap to carry junior around in (you can both do it easily) and take a view...
