We used a wooden frame out of old decking laid 4mm mild steel over it, hammered the edges over so the steel couldn't move around then drilled though the steel and frame then used bolts a ny-lock nuts to keep it in place. It is all made from scrap but does its job

4mm steel!!!!! That is one hell of a workbench. Brilliant when you make stuff out of scrap, that will last a lifetime.

At the time we was going to use a steel frame from old box section too, but there wasn't enough!

theres a b and q near magnum panels that do  kitchen worktops for £10 end of line stock

Is this the one in Rochdale? I'll give them a ring

Thanks for the other suggestions guys, using some stirips of metal as a bit of a kickplate type thing round the edges sounds like a good idea to me

All my work bench is a few old cut down fence posts (witch were free as it's only the last foot that's in the ground that rots) screwed together with brackets into H frames, an old kitchen worktop witch was also free, along with a shelf made from some 2" angle iron that used to be part of an old swing and an old pallet I used to move the mini around on got broken up and used for slats.  The most expensive items being the angle brackets and screws to hold it all together and later some large casters so it was easier to move if needed.
