I was doing some searches and I found a lot of threads, but not many photos.  I recently purchased a bolt in rear roll cage and will be installing it in the near future.  I was looking through the stance thread and I noticed this picture.  I've seen numerous Minis with roll cages, but this is the first time I have ever noticed bolts on the outside.  For all those with bolt-in roll cages, is this what it normally looks like?

That's how they are. But they're better with the nuts on the inside of he car and then the bolt heads etc painted body colour so they're not so obvious.

That and there less likely to be ripped off by anything your driving over.

I use spreader plates on the inside and out as well.

Pretty odd way of fitting that as it also means the thread is getting road salt and dirt all over it.

Just cut the end of the thread off or fit dome nuts on the ends

Or do the sensible thing as mentioned above and fit the bolts the other way around.

I would fit them with the bolts on the inside and the nuts on the outside. 2 reasons:

 

1) If you are fitting it yourself, it will be easier to drop the bolts in from the inside, to locate all the holes then, pop nuts on from the outside.

 

2) You should be using lock nuts but IF they were to fail, come loose and fall off, the bolts will still keep the cage in position. Just paint the ends of the bolts the same as the underside of the mini. The angle of the bolts where they come through the sill, shouldn't make them much lower than the floor anyway.

Ours has the bolts going into the cr and as mentioned above, uses spreader plates.

Thanks for all the responses.  Most of the cages I've seen must have been weld ins.  I'm planning on using stainless bolts to help prevent rust, but now I'm not sure what direction I want to stick the bolts in.  I do agree that if the nuts are on the outside, then the bolts will at least stay in place.  However, I imagine it would probably look better with the nuts on the inside.  I do think that painting the bolts and cutting them would certainly make them less noticeable.

stainless has absolutely next to naff all tensile strength, any twist in the shell could shear the bolts.

 

not what you want in an impact, bolts to shear and the cage starts to fold as its not held in place

yea i use spreader plates inside and out on both sills and rwar arches.... mines not fitted for strength just for looks really as ive welded the rear bins back in but i still can take the cage in and out...;0)

I have the plates that mount on the outside.  I'll just have to mount the nuts on the outside and do my best to conceal the mounts
