Just to close this off. I changed to an uprated powerspark coil which did give a slightly better spark, but the thing that made the biggest difference was changing to a new battery. I now have a varta silver d21 heavy duty battery - now the voltage at the coil when cranking is a much healthier 10.8v, and this made a huge improvement to the spark. It still wasn't perfect when turning the engine over without starting (but it was much better), however, when the engine was running it was a massive improvement. Now I just have to get all the timing set up again!!
